Insteon automation used a combination of powerline and RF communication known as Dual-Band technology.  Insteon devices repeat messages over both RF and powerline dramatically increasing reliability through the use of this dual mesh network..

Insteon uses a powerline communication frequency of 131.65Khz and an RF frequency of 915MHz.  For this and other reasons Insteon is not directly compatible with X10 automation.  However, many Insteon devices also have the capability to communicate using X10 standards.  This was done to provide a convenient path for transitioning an existing X10 installation to much more reliable Insteon.
